About
the San Augustine County
Historical
Foundation
The
San Augustine County Historical Foundation, established in the early
1960s, is a non-profit organization that has been interested in the
preservation and restoration of the County's historical heritage for
many years. With the assistance of two foundations, the Gill
Foundation through it's Dallas officees and the
Summerlee
Foundation of Dallas,
San Augustine's public records dating back to the 1830s have been
preserved. A computer indexing system has been developed,
making the contents of these records easily and quickly available to
the public for the first time.
Had
this monumental task not been undertaken and accomplished, many of
the records now available for search could not have been examined at
all because of the age deterioration of the paper. Many of the early
records simply could not be handled without destroying them.
The
town of San Augustine was in the process of development as early as
1830, and formally recognized by the Mexican government in 1834.
At this time an 'ayuntamiento' was established, bringing a formal
record-keeping process to the area. The preservation of these
early records has
become a major research asset for many people. Fortunately, the
absence of a courthouse fire over the years has added considerable
value and contributed greatly to the completeness of these records.
San
Augustine's rich history is forever preserved, and now available for
public use.
